Q&A with Dr Kevin Fernando: Important considerations for people with T2DM who are fasting during Ramadan

Length: 04:45

In this video, Dr Kevin Fernando talks about important considerations for people with T2DM who are fasting during Ramadan.

“Some of my patients with T2DM are preparing to fast during Ramadan. What advice can I give them?”

“I have a 43-year-old male patient with recently diagnosed T2DM who is preparing to fast for Ramadan. He is currently taking metformin (1 g twice a day) and gliclazide (80 mg twice a day) to control his glucose levels. He is generally in good health. At his pre-Ramadan assessment, should I consider altering his diabetes treatment?”

“I have a 72-year old-female patient who would like to fast for Ramadan. She is currently taking metformin (1 g twice a day) and gliclazide (80 mg twice a day) to control her glucose levels. She is frail, has high blood pressure and has a history of renal disease (eGFR <60). At her pre-Ramadan assessment, should I consider altering her diabetes treatment?”
